The coronavirus is changing.

New mutations raise new questions.

One of the most urgent at the moment: Do the Covid vaccines also work against the Delta variant?

Corona vaccinations reduce the risk of severe Covid courses and protect people from being infected with the corona virus.

Nations around the world are currently focusing on the rapid progress of vaccination campaigns.

Covid vaccines that have been approved to date show a protective effect of up to 95 percent, as the German Society for Immunology informs.

But since the outbreak of the corona pandemic, the coronavirus has developed different variants.

Including the British, Brazilian and South African variants.

Relatively new is the Delta variant, which appeared for the first time in India and is currently worrying authorities around the world.

What does the appearance of the new mutant mean for the vaccination protection offered by approved Covid vaccines?

Delta variant also in Germany: which vaccine protects best?

The delta variant, which is considered particularly contagious, is being detected more and more frequently.

Within the last four weeks, 91.2 percent of the reported corona infections in Great Britain were due to the Delta variant.

In Germany, 12.4 percent of Covid patients were infected with this relatively new variant in the last four weeks

, reports Deutsche Welle as the international broadcaster of the Federal Republic of Germany (as of June 28, 2021).

Two employees are employed in the Lower Saxony State Health Office with Sars-CoV-2 diagnostics.

In the office, it is observed how the number of corona infected with the delta variant is developing.

The office collects the numbers on a random basis or checks on suspicion whether there is an infection with the variant.

A corona vaccination offers protection against the Delta variant, but the protective effect differs depending on the vaccine.

As the Pharmazeutische Zeitung (PZ) further informs,

the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is probably less effective against the Delta variant.

Survey on the subject of corona vaccination

Overview of the current state of knowledge:

  • Vaccine Comirnaty from Biontech / Pfizer

: Data from the British health authority Public Health England (PHE) show, according to the Pharmazeutische Zeitung, that the Biontech vaccine in people who have been completely - i.e. twice - vaccinated, the probability of an infection with severe disease and hospitalization by more than 90 percent lowers. Those who have only received the first dose so far would also be protected, but not to the same extent as those who had been vaccinated twice.

  • Covid vaccination from Moderna

: Since this is also an mRNA vaccine, a similarly high rate of effectiveness can be expected as with the vaccine from Biontech / Pfizer, the editorial network Germany (RND) quotes the US virologist Anthony Fauci.

According to the RND, the protective effect would be almost 90 percent after the second vaccination dose.

  • Vaxzevria from Astrazeneca

: Here, the full vaccination offers a more than 90 percent protective effect against severe corona infections with the Delta variant, as the PZ informs.

The first dose of Vaxzevria already showed a protective effect of 71 percent, it said.

  • Johnson & Johnson vaccine

: Although there are currently no efficacy data on the Delta variant, there is reason to believe that the vaccine is less effective against the Delta variant than the above-mentioned vaccines, according to the PZ.

    Dr.

Scott Gottlieb, former head of the US FDA, recently spoke to the broadcaster CBS News that the vaccine was only 60 percent effective, according to the PZ.

Although no second vaccine dose of the Johnson & Johnson preparation is planned, the Pharmazeutische Zeitung advises that the vaccine should be given a booster soon in view of the spread of the Delta variant.

According

to the PZ,

data from Germany would show that

mRNA

boosting can significantly increase the protective effect of vector

vaccines
