After the knife attack in Erfurt, the public prosecutor applied for the 32-year-old suspect to be placed in a psychiatric hospital.
The Erfurt district court followed the application on Tuesday afternoon, said a court spokesman.
So far, no motive has been identified.
"There is an urgent suspicion that the accused is mentally ill." Accordingly, the investigators also assume that the alleged attacker acted in a state of incapacity.
He is said to have had psychological problems before the crime and had been in a psychiatric ward for years.
The man is said to have attacked two men aged 45 and 68 with a knife on Monday morning and seriously injured them.
The victims were taken to hospital and operated on.
Neither of the two was in danger of death, it said.
Arrest in the apartment
The perpetrator was initially able to flee unrecognized.
However, the police later found a suspect and arrested him.
Officials found the man wounded in his home.
It was said that he probably inflicted the injuries himself.
According to the investigators' first findings, the perpetrators and victims did not know each other.
The police also initially ruled out a political motive.
