The Spanish government has approved in the Council of Ministers a bill that recognizes the possibility for citizens to change their gender legally without having to have hormonal treatments or to submit medical reports. According to the Executive itself, this new rule guarantees people the so-called "right to self-determination" of gender identity.
The proposal - which will now be submitted for debate and for possible approval by Parliament - was promoted in particular by the Minister of Equal Opportunities, Irene Montero, with the aim of protecting the rights of transsexuals. L'ok of the CDM comes after a long phase of negotiations involving the LGBT + collectives and a heated public debate between pro and anti movements.
