The basis for maintaining healthy teeth.

Strict oral hygiene and cleanliness of the teeth is the basis for maintaining healthy teeth, as it reduces the amount of harmful bacteria in the mouth, and allows the body to protect itself.

Bacteria are microorganisms that are everywhere and live in the body and outside it, these bacteria are also found in the oral cavity.

The body bacteria can be divided into two groups:

1. The harmful group of bacteria we want to "fight" - these are the "bad" bacteria.

The beneficial group of bacteria without which the body cannot exist and which we want to save - these are the "good" bacteria.

The harmless bacteria represent most of the body count of microorganisms and thus occupy most of the cavities (mouth, nose and intestinal mucosa for example) and prevent the culture of harmful bacteria and infections caused by the harmful bacteria.

Both groups of bacteria are in the mouth, and maintaining a balance between the group of "good" bacteria and the group of "harmful" bacteria contributes to the maintenance of healthy teeth and gums.

It should be noted that the microorganisms that cause tooth decay and gum disease can not be completely destroyed, and only the reduction in their number will help the body to protect itself and keep the mouth in good condition.

For the purpose of this article I will use the term bacteria to describe the harmful microorganisms as we all use it in everyday life.

The bacteria that cause tooth decay cannot be completely destroyed, only reduced.

Proper oral hygiene includes thorough cleaning of the entire oral cavity: tooth surfaces, gums, tongue, and certainly dentures and crowns if any. This hygiene reduces the number of bacteria, removes the food residue that constitutes a "rich meal" for them and helps the body and especially the mucus that contains enzymes and cells to fight bacteria, fungi and viruses.

Bacteria break down sugar from the food we consume into acids - these acids dissolve the tooth substance that causes the loss of minerals like calcium and phosphorus and therefore causes tooth decay.

Poor oral hygiene will cause food debris to accumulate on tooth surfaces and dentures and form a bacterial plaque (bacterial colonies are structurally and functionally organized) as time passes mineralization occurs and tartar forms which is a protective layer for accumulated bacteria, so they can not be cleaned with household utensils. .

Bacteria that are trapped under tartar and continue to accumulate cause aggressive damage to the gums and tissues around the teeth and hence to the decay and loss of natural teeth.

Tartar that can not be removed at home using a toothbrush and floss - can be cleaned at the dental clinic.

How to maintain dental hygiene at a day-to-day level?

Using the right brush:

It is recommended to use an electric brush that performs several rotations (vibrations) per minute about a hundred times more than can be done manually.

These vibrations break down the bacterial plaque on the tooth area and refresh the blood flow in the gums.

It is important to note that there are brushes that cost between NIS 150 and NIS 400, and they are good enough and are even equipped with a "flicker" mechanism that warns of unnecessary pressure that can cause damage.

All the other innovations do not really contribute to better quality brushing and you can definitely settle for good basic alternatives that produce the right vibration for cleaning.

recommended.

If you brush your teeth with a manual brush, it is recommended to choose a brush with soft bristles (SOFT or medium), these brushes are suitable for most patients and are strong enough to clean bacterial plaque and food debris. HARD brushes can damage the surrounding teeth and tissues due to aggressive use. EXTRASOFT brushes are quite soft but suitable for very specific cases and not for the general public.

2. Complete cleaning of the tooth surfaces

It is very important to clean the surfaces between the adjacent teeth to which the bristles of the brush do not reach, the cleaning can be done using a brush and flossing. When using a brush - hold the hand brush in a horizontal position, with the middle of the brush resting on the gums and the middle of the tooth, then make about four to five turns from the gums towards the tooth - thus effectively removing the dirt outside the tooth. Important Emphasis - Perform this action gently.

And when flossing, cut a floss 30-40 inches long, twist the floss on a finger or two fingers from each hand, slide between the teeth, reach to the gums, press on the tooth area (form the letter C in the floss) take out and repeat In the adjacent teeth. The flossing operation can be replaced with a "jet" that works with water pressure. This operation is called intra-dental cleaning.

3. Oral denture cleaning

When it comes to permanent dentures (bridge) cleaning should be done using small (intra-dental) brushes that can be inserted under the permanent denture or the permanent bridge or alternatively clean the dentures using a "jet".

4. Cleansing the tongue

The clean appearance of the tongue can confuse many people, since it is precisely in this area that the largest amount of bacteria accumulates in the oral cavity. The tongue should be brushed using the bristle bristles or using the back side designed for this purpose.

5.Use of mouthwash

Mouthwashes do not replace brushing and it is recommended to use them because water reaches all the mucous membranes in the oral cavity - between the teeth, tongue, cheek wall and so on.

At the end of brushing, it is recommended to gargle mouthwash between 30 seconds per minute (according to the manufacturer's instructions) and spit.
