This is one of the super tasks that parents are required to do - get their children to eat more vegetables.

A new study has found that there is a much better and more pleasant way than working on them and hiding vegetables in their food - just need to increase the amount of vegetables on the plate.

In the current study, researchers showed that larger portions of vegetables resulted in children increasing their vegetable consumption by an average of 68 percent (an addition of 21 grams), in a 4-week trial that included 67 children ages 3 to 5. The research team used broccoli and corn as their test vegetables. , And doubled the amount served from 60 grams to 120 grams - to see if and how it would change children's eating habits.

"The increase we saw in the study is about a third of a serving or 12 percent of the recommended daily intake for young children," explained clinical nutritionist Hanim Diktas of the University of Pennsylvania. .

The type of vegetables chosen, the food next to which they were served and also the quantity - all were variables that affected the consumption of the vegetables.

In this case, the researchers tried to add butter and salt to the vegetables in some of the tests.

However, this did not significantly affect the amount of vegetables the children ate, regardless of portion size.

The portion size per se was a much more effective strategy for improving their diet.

This may be because the vegetables in the experiment were quite popular vegetables even without butter and salt: 76 percent of children rated the vegetables as "just fine" or even "tasty," and researchers say the choice of food is important.

Along with the broccoli and corn, fish sticks, rice, apple sauce and milk were served.

"We chose foods that kids usually like, but not the kids' favorite foods," says nutritionist Barbara Rawls, also from the University of Pennsylvania. "If you offer vegetables alongside chicken nuggets you may be disappointed."

"Food combinations are something to be aware of, because how tangible the vegetables are compared to the other foods on the plate will affect the response to the portion size. You need to make sure the vegetables are quite tasty compared to other foods."

In other words, chances are there will probably be different results with different vegetables, maybe ones that kids like less.

Researchers are interested in conducting further tests on how portion sizes and even food combinations may work.

"It's important to serve children lots of vegetables, but it's also important to serve them the ones they like because they have to compete with other foods on the plate," says Rawls. More".
