The match between Fiorentina and Turin opened the Serie A 2020/21, and was then played at the home of the grenades on the first return day. A classic trend for the championship calendar that, however, will no longer be seen: from next season, in fact, in Serie A the calendar will be asymmetrical between the first and second rounds. This was decided by the Lega Council, which met this morning.
"The League Council, held this morning, unanimously established that the Serie A TIM calendar will have an asymmetrical second round in the sequence of days compared to the first round", explained the League in a note at the end of the meeting. .
Skipped the stew option, with the proposal withdrawn in the last assembly of the clubs given the impossibility of avoiding disputes, the Serie A League has thus launched a novelty at the calendar level. What will change, therefore, in detail, with the new format? The 19 matches of the first round will not be repeated, in the sequence, even in the second leg, as happened up to now: it means, for example, that if the draw in mid-July put Inter-Udinese and Fiorentina-Inter on the calendar in the first two days 'first leg, these would not be played in the same order in the second round, on the contrary they could be played even months later.
It does not end here, because the composition of the matches within the same round will also change: if Milan-Turin were drawn together with Inter-Udinese, these two matches could be played on different days in the return leg. And this is precisely the novelty compared to what is already happening today in other leagues such as the Premier League, La Liga and Ligue 1, which however keep the composition of the individual days unchanged.
The only criterion set by the League for the draw is that "a match will not have its return before another 8 matches have been played": this means that if Inter-Juventus were played on Matchday 15, the match of return Juventus-Inter cannot be played before the 24th round.
The reasons for the revolution for the calendar? "The new formula will allow a better distribution of matches, not conditioned in this way by constraints present in the first leg that can fall on the same day as the return leg and vice versa", explained the Lega Serie A in a note.
