The Covid-19 continues to grow, in part of Asia and particularly in India.

The country has crossed, according to figures published on Friday, the barrier of 400,000 deaths from the coronavirus.

Globally, it is the third state to pass this symbolic milestone.

In front of India, the United States has 605,010 deaths linked to Covid-19 and Brazil has 520,095.

But according to many experts, the toll of the epidemic in India would far exceed one million dead, after a galloping outbreak of the epidemic in April and May, which had completely overwhelmed hospitals in the country.

This upsurge in cases has been attributed to the Delta variant, which is much more contagious and to a relaxation of restriction measures.

In recent weeks, the number of new daily cases has declined markedly.

Many measures have therefore been lifted, but this new relaxation raises fears of a new wave of contamination in the coming months.

Especially since for the moment, only 5% of the inhabitants have received two doses, due to a shortage of vaccines, a disorganized administration and a certain reluctance within the population.

Update on the race against Covid-19 around the world

On June 21, the government tried to boost the immunization campaign by making the immunization free for all adults, which led to a surge in demand, with more than nine million doses administered in a single day. .

Since then, the vaccination rate has come down, with an average of just over four million doses administered each day last week, according to government figures.

The government's goal is to immunize 1.1 billion adults by the end of the year.

Burma cases outbreak

The situation is not much better in Burma. The authorities even confined, this Friday, the second most populous city, Mandalay. The country is currently facing a national outbreak of Covid-19 contamination, which coincides with a strike by caregivers to protest against the ruling military junta. Two other municipalities in the Bago region (center) will be subject to the same restrictions, which prohibit more than one person from leaving their home for non-medical reasons. Only civil servants are exempt.

No deconfinement date has been set by the State Administration Council's Ministry of Health and Sports (SAC) - the official name of the junta in power since a February 1 coup. The areas concerned bring together more than two million people, according to a 2014 census, and are in addition to those already confined since May in several secondary towns in Chin State (west), near the Indian border.

This Thursday, 1,500 cases of Covid-19 were recorded in the country, while the rate was around 100 per day in early June. The structurally fragile Burmese health system was already struggling to respond to Covid-19 even before the putsch that overthrew the civilian government of Aung San Suu Kyi. Since then, thousands of doctors, volunteers and government officials have joined a campaign of massive civil disobedience to protest the military regime. At the same time, the vaccination campaign is in its infancy. Only a shipment of 1.5 million vaccines arrived from India at the start of the year, for a country of 54 million inhabitants. According to state media, the junta leader bought two million doses of vaccine from Russia and negotiations are underway with China.
