"Covid has eaten up gender equality: globally the gender gap on the basis of 157 countries in the world settles at around 68% and this means that from 2021 onwards it will take at least 135.6 years to reach 100%, or gender equality, while in 2020 99 would have been 'enough'. The economist Cristiana Compagno, one of the first female directors in Italy, said this at the Near / Far festival in Udine, from 2008 to 2013 at the helm of the University of Udine where she is now full professor of Economics and Business Management.
"The pandemic - added Compagno - has extended the goal of equal opportunities in access to education, the labor market, political leadership and medical treatment by a generation throughout the world".
According to the former rector, it is essential "to address the issue of gender distance in an extremely operational way so as not to jeopardize the success of the NRP and the efficient allocation of the Recovery Fund resources". Stressing that the issue is "alarming", the teacher suggested that it should be faced with all possible measures to "accelerate" social and cultural processes. "From decontribution to gender quotas, which are not illiberal, as some say - he concluded -, Illiberal is not allowing everyone to start from the same floor and allowing for disconnected floors and glass ceilings".
