The risk of hospitalization after a Delta infection is twice as high as compared to other variants, according to a study.

The vaccination protects enormously.

In Great Britain, most people newly infected with Corona contract the Delta variant. The mutation, which was first detected in India in October 2020, is also spreading in other countries. As the German international broadcaster Deutsche Welle

, around 91 percent of new infections in Great Britain in June 2021 can be traced back to the Delta variant, also known as B.1.617.2.

In Austria it was 37 percent, in Germany 12.4 percent - and the trend is rising. The reason for this is that Delta is one of the highly contagious virus variants. In May, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified it as a "variant of concern". But what does that mean in terms of the lethality emanating from Delta?

According to Deutsche Welle, there is so far only little scientific data on whether the delta variant causes more deaths than other corona variants.

According to information from the British health authority Public Health England (PHE), the current data would, however, indicate

that infection with the Delta variant leads to hospital stays more often

.

The risk is even twice as high as after infection with the "British" corona mutation B.1.1.7, according to the results published in

The Lancet

.

The delta variant is spreading in many European countries.

As a result, there are travel restrictions.

In addition to India and Great Britain, Portugal and Russia are currently among the so-called virus variant areas.

Survey on the subject of corona vaccination

Full vaccination protects against the Corona Delta variant

Overall, however, there were relatively few deaths from Delta, as the PHE further informs

: By June 21, 2021, 117 of 92,056 corona patients infected with Delta had died. That corresponds to a case mortality of 0.1 percent, according to Public Health England. For comparison: The case mortality in B.1.1.7 is 1.9 percent. The low delta mortality rate is mainly attributed to the fact that a large part of the population in the UK is already fully vaccinated against Covid.

Whether mRNA or vector vaccines

: Both protect against severe corona courses, also with regard to the delta variant

.

However, according to Deutsche Welle, the protective effect is lower here.

The results of a PHE study have shown that the Biontech vaccine protects up to 96 percent against severe delta courses after the second vaccination.

The Astrazeneca preparation, on the other hand, develops a 71 percent protective effect after the first injection, which increases to 92 percent after the second vaccination.
