Many garden plants are pretty to look at.

But that shouldn't hide the fact that there can be dangerous poisonous plants behind it.

There can be many dangers lurking in the garden at home: For example, monkshood and angel's trumpet with their colorful flowers are real eye-catchers - but both can be dangerous to both humans and animals.

In particular, the risk to children should not be underestimated.

That is why hobby gardeners should find out which plants are poisonous before creating the garden.

Poisonous plants: These garden plants are more dangerous than expected

  • Blue monkshood (Aconitum napellus)

: With its blue-purple flowers, the monkshood is often seen in gardens. But be careful: it is the most poisonous plant in Europe. The poison penetrates the skin just by touching it and can lead to skin inflammation and severe poisoning. This is mainly due to the alkaloid aconitine. Other typical symptoms are numbness of the parts of the body, nausea, cardiac arrhythmias or nervous excitement. All parts of the monkshood plant are poisonous.

  • Angel's Trumpet (Brugmansia Hybrid)

: Unfortunately, the angel's trumpet is not quite as angelic as the name suggests. In fact, all parts of the plant are poisonous - especially roots and seeds. The angel's trumpet contains various alkaloids, above all scopolamine. In its South American homeland, the plant is even used as an intoxicant, which can lead to death if the wrong dose is taken.

  • Lily of the valley

    (Convallaria majalis)

: Lily of the valley are often confused with the harmless wild garlic, which can have nasty consequences. The lily of the valley is poisonous in all parts of the plant, which is due to the glycosides it contains. These cause vomiting, diarrhea and cramps, and have a strong effect on the heart. Excessive consumption can lead to cardiac arrhythmias and, in extreme cases, cardiac arrest.

  • Deadly nightshade (Atropa belladonna)

: The berries of the deadly nightshade can be particularly inviting to children - especially since they have a pleasantly sweet taste. However, just a few berries can be fatal for children and adults can also die if consumed. The deadly nightshade contains a large amount of alkaloids, including hyoscyamine, atropine and scopolamine. Atropine is mainly found in the fruit, while hyoscyamine predominates in the leaves. Both poisons can lead to physical restlessness, euphoric states as well as confusion and cramps, depending on the dose ingested. Later, on the other hand, paralysis and anesthesia-like sleep can occur, as the Industrieverband Agrar e. V. informs on its website and can lead to death through respiratory paralysis.

  • Yew (Taxus baccata)

: The berries of the yew are non-toxic, but almost all other parts of the plant are dangerous.

This is due to the highly toxic alkaloid taxine.

Animals in particular can be dangerous and lead to death if cuttings from the garden are mixed with the grass in the forage.

But also in humans, extracts from needles can lead to circulatory failure and severe cardiac arrhythmias if the wrong dose is used.

According to the Industrieverband Agrar e.

    V. about 50 grams of needles can be fatal.
