On Tuesday, Britney Spears' longtime attorney Sam Ingham filed a motion in court to be released from his mandate.
It has now become known that the pop star's mother, Lynne Spears, had previously applied to the court to allow her daughter to hire her own lawyer for the dispute over guardianship, as the broadcaster CNN reports.
If so, Spears could at least live a little more self-determined.
CNN relies on a court file dated July 1.
It says that Spears is in a different situation than in 2008. At that time, the guardianship proceedings had started.
Recently, the dispute over the guardianship of Spears' finances and her personal freedom came to a head.
The 39-year-old called for an end to guardianship in an emotional court hearing at the end of June.
Spears said she felt taken advantage of by her family and managers.
She is controlled and cannot determine her own life.
She also said she wanted to choose her own lawyer.
Father manages daughter's assets
The long-time manager, Larry Rudolph, who had worked for Spears since the mid-1990s, had also resigned just a day before Ingham.
He said he hadn't spoken to Spears in over two years and his services were no longer needed.
Ingham, a lawyer, has been at Spears' side since 2008 after the singer collapsed mentally due to professional and personal problems and a court gave her father the guardianship at the time.
Since then, Jamie Spears has managed his famous daughter's fortune and other affairs.
In 2019, he stepped down for health reasons and only manages his daughter's assets.
A court appointed another guardian for their personal concerns, including medical decisions.
A financial trustee was added in 2020.
The Spears case received a lot of attention in the spring through the documentary "Framing Britney Spears" and sparked heated discussions, especially in the social networks.
The documentary asks, among other things, whether someone could be a global superstar and a barely sane person who should be put under control at the same time.
Many celebrities and fans then expressed their support for the singer under the hashtag »#FreeBritney«.
The next hearing in the guardianship dispute is scheduled for July 14, according to CNN.
