The environment also benefited in many ways.

But the following still applies: resources such as water and mineral resources are becoming scarce, the desert areas on earth are expanding at breakneck speed and nature and fauna are also severely threatened by the destruction of rainforests and other habitats.

But there is also good news: Everyone can do something about climate change and environmental degradation.

Even with the sports program, a lot can be changed that is good for the environment. The sports brand Reebok has carried out a study in which, among other things, it sheds light on how sustainable sports equipment is. The result: the choice of fitness equipment should be carefully considered.

The average CO2 load of a yoga mat is only 0.7 kg, while that of a conventional sports mat is 3.2 kg

. Yoga mats and exercise balls are made of PVC and therefore only cause 0.6 kg and 0.7 kg of carbon emissions each, according to the Reebok study.

According to Reebok, performance strategist Abigail Ireland recommends so-called calisthenic workouts to reduce one's own carbon footprint: “Calisthenic workouts are highly recommended for strength, flexibility, endurance and all-round fitness,

the exercises with your own body weight bring results and cause no carbon emissions

”, says Ireland:“ When you invest in equipment, it pays to rely on durable basics such as dumbbells, kettlebells, barbells and stretch bands, these offer a wide variety of training options and do not require electricity ”.

Five tips for environmentally friendly training

  • Exercise outside

: "Outdoor workouts are free and can often be done close to your own home," says Dr.

Folusha Oluwajana is quoted as a personal trainer and general practitioner in the Reebok press release.

A car ride is usually not necessary.

  • Buying reusable items

: the less garbage you produce, the better for the environment.

Switching from plastic bottles to stainless steel drinking bottles is therefore recommended.

  • Look for a training partner

: Sports dates not only promote motivation, they can also protect your wallet and the environment.

On the one hand, there would be a joint trip to the gym or - if you and your sports partner are exercising outside - the opportunity to share sports equipment.

Everyone has to buy shoes or sportswear themselves, but there are training devices that they can get together.

  • Rely on body

weight exercises: If you use your own body weight for yourself during training, you not only reduce the risk of injury: It is also extremely environmentally friendly because you do not have to buy any equipment.

  • Integrating exercise into everyday life

: It sounds banal, but it has immense effects on your health and the environment in the long term: Leave your car behind and cycle to work.

If you can't do without a car or public transport because the commute is too long, you can park or get out about 15 minutes' walk from the workplace.
