Hydrangeas Burned: How to Save Your Hydrangea

If the hydrangea was wrong and got sunburn, it is not too late.

The burnt leaves will not regenerate, but gardening fans can take immediate action.

The plant then usually recovers well and blooms again profusely with beautiful, healthy leaves at the latest in the next year.

How to help a burnt hydrangea:

  • Accustom indoor

    hydrangeas slowly to the sun

: If you keep hydrangeas as indoor plants in winter, you should get them used to the sun and the conditions outside as slowly and gradually as possible.

First some morning sun and then slowly more and more until the plant finally comes to a rather shady place in the garden.

  • Moving hydrangeas

: If, on the other hand, the garden hydrangea is already burned, only moving it usually helps.

This is quite easy to do with plants in pots or tubs.

You should try to move bedding plants into a west or east bed.

The plant should have shade at the new location by noon at the latest.

Unfortunately, older hydrangeas are less able to cope with a change of location.

  • Cutting off leaves

: You can cut back all burnt parts of plants such as leaves or flowers.

Cut off under the next pair of leaves.

Unfortunately, the flowers are usually also affected by the cut.

Don't cut off too much so the plant still has enough energy to recover.

  • Leave the leaves like this

: If you don't mind the burnt leaves, you can leave them on the plant.

    It doesn't do any harm.

The leaves still supply the hydrangea with energy, so that they can stay on the plant.

  • Providing shade

: If moving the plant is not an option, plant fans just have to provide shade.

This can be done with an umbrella or with a privacy screen as a temporary solution.

In the long term, for example, planting nearby plants with taller plants would make sense.

  • Pour correctly

: Sun rays and water droplets from pouring can act like a burning glass.

Therefore water only in the morning or in the evening, never in the midday heat.

As with many other plants, the leaves and flowers of the hydrangea should not get wet.

At best, the hydrangea gets the ideal location after buying it.

In addition, burns should be distinguished from diseases and pests first.

For example, drought can lead to similar symptoms.

Spider mites leave small holes in the plants and fungi could also be to blame for the leaf color.

Ideally, you should therefore check your hydrangea regularly.
