Consumption can cause life-threatening poisoning.

Braunschweig - The Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety issued a warning on Friday: The product “Creamy Almond Ready to eat vegan sauce” from the manufacturer Joy in a Jar is contaminated with Clostridium botulinum bacteria.

Only batches with the best before date September 1, 2021 are affected by the recall.

The product was sold in sales outlets in Frankfurt am Main and Berlin.

Customers who purchased the sauce online received an email from the manufacturer with the relevant information.

Product Warning: These symptoms can occur

The bacteria can cause severe poisoning called food botulism.

This was announced by the Federal Office for Consumer Protection.

The symptoms include signs of paralysis, which are initially noticeable with blurred vision, double vision, swallowing disorders, dry mouth or photophobia.

Diarrhea, vomiting and headaches are also symptoms of poisoning.

As a result, the paralysis can also affect the heart muscle or the respiratory muscles, making the poisoning potentially life-threatening.

Anyone who has consumed the product and notices symptoms within 36 hours should immediately consult a doctor and suspect food botulism.

However, the Federal Office advises against seeking medical treatment as a precautionary measure without symptoms.

The affected product can be returned to any Joy in a Jar sales point.

Even without presenting the receipt, consumers will be reimbursed the purchase price.

Food safety in Germany

Strict guidelines apply in Germany to ensure food safety.

However, recalls do occur from time to time, the number of recalls has more than doubled in recent years:

In the case of food, two main reasons are relevant for a product warning: foreign bodies and contamination. Aldi Nord recently called back a dip that contained broken glass. Edeka, Rewe and Kaufland warned against a flour that could cause health problems.
