Our oral cavity is used by us for many purposes: it allows us to eat, taste and even talk.

When something bothers us in the mouth, our day can turn into a real nightmare.

When young children suffer from wounds or various viral diseases, they have difficulty eating and weep bitterly, and we adults are also often stressed at the sight of a wound that appears on the side of the cheeks or on the mouth.

You will immediately understand what types of diseases and symptoms are most common in the oral cavity, when you should consult an oral medicine specialist (and not a dentist or family doctor for example) and most importantly - what are the ways to help you find suspicious lesions and signs.

Before that, here are some things to know about the field of oral medicine:

• This field actually deals with all oral diseases that are not related to teeth.

• There are only about 100 oral medicine specialists in Israel.

Among other things, they know how to diagnose and treat oral diseases, salivary diseases, jaw joint problems;

Various lesions located in the oral cavity and also perform small surgical operations like biopsies to diagnose and treat oral lesions.

• In addition, these specialists help patients with systemic diseases such as diabetes, osteoporosis and cancer, which are required for dental care.

Oral diseases: The importance of diagnosis, treatment and follow-up

There are all kinds of diseases in the oral cavity: viral, fungal, bacterial or those that appear on an autoimmune background.

It is important to know that often pain that appears in the oral cavity will indicate a problem at another source.

Here are some types of diseases / symptoms you should know about:

Apatite: The most classic

There are several types of apatite.

They are common at all ages but are more common up to age 40 or so.

It is worth noting that the presence of aphthae in the mouth can be a manifestation of other systemic diseases in the body, such as: inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease;

And sometimes even indicate a deficiency in nutrients such as iron that may cause it.

In any case, treatment of the disease or the relevant cause will usually contribute to their disappearance.

Not every mouth sore is aphthae.

By the way, what does not always seem to us to be aphthae is indeed an aphthae, and not every sore in the mouth is an aphthae - sometimes it is a different type of wound.

Unlike a viral wound like herpes which can be contagious, the aphthae are not contagious.

These facts are another good reason to approach the diagnosis and examination of the oral cavity.

Fibroids: Non-dangerous tumors

Fibroids are non-dangerous type tumors.

In most cases, after an oral medicine specialist samples the area and sends it for a pathological examination the diagnosis will indeed testify to it.

Other tumors that may appear in the mouth can be, for example, HPV (papillomavirus) lesions that require removal, but usually do not pose a danger in the oral cavity.

Diseases of the oral cavity: Chronic diseases

The most common of these is the walker - Planos.

It is a chronic disease that usually involves both the oral cavity and the skin and is characterized by white and / or red spots in the oral cavity and especially on the sides of the tongue and the floor of the mouth, (white and / or red spot may undergo cancerous transformation), or a wound that does not pass after two weeks. They usually appear in old age (fifth-sixth decade), and they may be accompanied by sores that cause a variety of sensations - from asymptomatic sensations, through discomfort in the mouth to a burning sensation and pain in the mouth.

This disease belongs to the type of autoimmune diseases - that is, during which the immune system attacks the body for no rational reason.

Oral cancer: It is important to occasionally peek in the mirror

Before we talk about oral cancer, let's do a little experiment: stand in front of the mirror, lift your tongue, move it to the sides and look closely at the entire oral cavity - including the cheeks and lips.

If you have noticed something new - you should follow.

If it does not go away within two weeks - consult an oral medicine specialist.

This experiment should be done once every few months - it can save your life!

Check yourself once every few months.

It is important to know that oral cancer that is not diagnosed in time can greatly impair the patient's quality of life and even cause his death.

Unlike other cancers that are located in internal and hidden organs, our mouth is the easiest to study, so it is important and worth doing.

Red spots (literally) that are worth noting in the oral cavity:

white and red spots on the sides of the tongue, (white and / or red spot may undergo cancerous transformation), or a wound that does not pass after two weeks.

By the way, the most common cause of a sore mouth is not cancer but trauma like a bite, or a burn.

The sense of taste may also change as a result of a virus (like the corona for example, but not only), and also due to nutritional deficiencies, chemotherapy treatments or even due to depression.

Dry mouth: Involves effects on the mucous membranes of the mouth and teeth

There are a number of conditions that can cause dry mouth. One of the diseases that can cause the phenomenon is "Shiugren's syndrome". It is a rheumatic-autoimmune disease that causes dry mouth and affects, among other things, the lacrimal glands in the eyes. The disease can appear alone (primary) or as a concomitant disease with other (secondary) diseases, the most common of which is arthritis. In any case, when this disease is suspected, it is recommended to consult an oral medicine specialist in order to make a diagnosis, treat the feeling of dry mouth and maintain the health of the mouth and teeth with the help of preventive medicine. It is important to know that dry mouth has multiple effects on the mucous membranes of the mouth and teeth (such as tooth decay, fungus, etc.), so in any case of feeling dry in the mouth, you should consult an oral medicine specialist. By the way, there are various other reasons that can cause dry mouth such as hypothyroidism, diabetes, medications and more.

Bottom line: our mouth is one of the easiest organs for us to follow.

Suffering from a wound that does not go away in two weeks?

Contact an oral medicine specialist.

It is important to remember that the mouth is a "sensor" for what is happening in the body and thanks to what is happening within it, it is possible to diagnose and treat diseases and other factors.
