New in the cinema: "

Summer 85

"

A small sailing boat, a seaside resort in Normandy, two teenage boys falling in love - and what does the police have to do with all of this? In »Summer 85«, the French director François Ozon describes the story of a first love in which it is only gradually revealed what the police officers on the northern French coast are actually investigating. It goes without saying that Alexis (Félix Lefebvre), who grew up in a rather middle-class family, and David (Benjamin Voisin), who comes from a wealthy Jewish family, come together. They listen to the mid-eighties hit "In Between Days" by the British dark wave band The Cure, are happy about their young bodies and laugh at David's enchantingly aggressive mother, played by Valeria Bruni Tedeschi.Full of enthusiasm for strange haircuts and other atmospheric details, the 53-year-old Ozon tells a touching drama of crush, betrayal and bitter loss in this film adaptation of a book for young people.

New literature: »Ciao« by Johanna Adorján

There are journalists who are convinced that something is only really important once they have reported on it personally. The author and journalist Johanna Adorján must have met many of them, because in her novel "Ciao" she describes this type in such a funny and precise way that some people might recognize themselves and for that reason alone her book is worth reading. The focus of »Ciao« is the columnist Hans Benedek, whose ego has long been much bigger than his reputation, and unfortunately Benedek thinks it is a good idea that he of all people should write a large portrait of the young star feminist Xandi Lochner. The two meet in Baden-Baden, in the bar of the casino, and it won't be Benedek's only mistake to kick the intern with whom he is having an affair.and who should write the portrait together with him - because of a female perspective and such. Adorján is a great observer. Before her hero drives to Baden-Baden in the yellow sports car, she describes the world of Berlin-Mitte: media and culture, exhibition openings, yoga, art house cinemas. And it is always terribly important who said what and wrote what, and who has been where with whom. "Ciao" is a social satire and a swan song to a world that is sinking with all its arrogance. In doing so, Adorján looks at the ridiculousness of what has been, but she also exposes the strain of those who move up. She succeeds in doing this with warmth and a keen sense for language. Before her hero drives to Baden-Baden in the yellow sports car, she describes the world of Berlin-Mitte: media and culture, exhibition openings, yoga, art house cinemas. New hip-hop: »Schwarzfahren« by Breezy

"Berlin is a bitch who knocks you in," raps Breezy in her debut album "Schwarzfahren". The American has only been living in the German capital for a few years. During these years she has understood how things are going there. For example, that you can be kicked out by the landlord despite the pandemic. He would then keep half of the deposit, "because fuck you really," said the rapper in the song "The Berlin Poem". But every time you start to hate the city, something unexpected, beautiful happens. And you stay. Like most Berliners, the 33-year-old is in this love-hate cycle. But »fare dodging« is more than an homage to Berlin. The album is about racism, homophobia, feminism. But you only notice the activism when you listen carefully. It's worth it,because the lyrics are poetic and snotty at the same time. In »#sayhername« she sings about police violence against black people and pays tribute to the American activist Kimberlé Crenshaw, a prominent representative of the Critical Race Theory. “Decolonize and Moisturize” is about her experience as a black woman in Berlin. And in »Get Out« she describes why she no longer lives in the USA: educational injustice, segregation, racism - and expensive rents. A problem that Berlin at least does not have everywhere.why she no longer lives in the USA: educational injustice, segregation, racism - and expensive rents.
