The Klimahaus Bremerhaven will remain closed to visitors on Saturday due to an apparently runaway monitor lizard.
"Several dozen employees are looking for the animal," said the spokesman, Holger Bockholt.
The approximately 80 centimeter long scale reptile disappeared from its enclosure on Friday.
The attempt to lure the adult Nile monitor out of its hiding place at night with bait was unsuccessful, according to the spokesman.
The animal does not pose any great danger, said Bockholt.
But: “If they are cornered, then they may snap shut.
You have a lot of dangerous bacteria in your mouth. "
Technical difficulties
In addition, the reptiles are used to hiding very well.
"They are very shy animals," said Bockholt.
The building is very large, the exhibition alone covers 11,500 square meters.
The almost fully grown Nile monitor had probably escaped in the early morning hours of Friday when the enclosure was not completely closed due to a technical malfunction.
