Post-corona syndrome that can disrupt many people's lives

Have you been sick with Kororna and since then you feel tired and in pain?

It turns out that quite a few of those who recover from corona suffer from symptoms similar to fibromyalgia that cause chronic pain and a constant feeling of flu.

Sound familiar?

Fibromyalgia is a persistent and common neurobiological syndrome that in addition to pain, includes a wide range of symptoms such as sleep disorders, fatigue, hypersensitivity to stimuli, cognitive problems and a constant feeling of flu.

Sounds familiar to you?

It turns out that there is much in common between it and the Long Covid - the one that attacks recover months after the disease - which can produce a wave of annoying comorbidities.

And if you believe the numbers, 90 percent of Corona patients will suffer from long-term symptoms, which means it is a tsunami.

"Fibromyalgia syndrome and chronic fatigue syndrome are functional (functional) somatic syndromes and there is a great deal of overlap between them," explains Prof. Dan Busquila, an expert in internal medicine and rheumatology who specializes in chronic pain research.

Now, it seems, a new syndrome is being added to them.

Prof Busquila says that many patients who have been to Corona have recently come to him and have developed symptoms similar to those of fibromyalgia patients and chronic fatigue syndrome.

"This is interesting because these syndromes are known to develop at times after viral infections or excessive stress," he noted.

The alarming link between long cubid and these syndromes arose following data collected and analyzed by the StuffThatWorks team (a platform based on mass wisdom and artificial intelligence). The data demonstrate a great deal of overlap and similarity between the symptoms of post-corona, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. "Corona infection and the stress associated with the disease may be further triggers for the development of post-corona syndrome, which is a kind of nurse for fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome," explains Prof. Busquila.

It is possible that this new information could help the healthcare system, physicians and researchers understand how to treat and alleviate post-corona syndrome, and even establish public policies tailored to the onset of this disease. Additional time and follow-up are needed to determine if long-coboid is also a long-lasting chronic disease that may last a lifetime, similar to fibromyalgia, but this is an option that should be considered based on current data.

If you think this is a necessary comparison, it is important to remember that for decades, the debilitating condition characterized by extensive pain and fatigue was not recognized by medicine and is considered a female complaint that originates in mood.

In fact, it was only in 2014 that fibromyalgia was recognized by the Israel Medical Association, but its sufferers still received contempt.

Although it is commonly thought that the disease originates in the brain, no one knows how fibromyalgia begins or what can be done to treat it.

The syndrome tends to occur in patients suffering from other diseases, especially inflammatory diseases.

The multiplicity of symptoms and the ongoing chronicity of the condition - cause significant impairment in the professional, social and family functioning of the patients.

Just recently a new study was published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation on mice and found further evidence that fibromyalgia is not just a real and painful disease, but that it may involve an autoimmune response that triggers the disease. When researchers injected antibodies into mice of 44 humans living with the syndrome, they noticed some classic animal symptoms, including muscle weakness, sensitivity and increased sensitivity to heat and cold. Control mice injected with antibodies from 39 healthy individuals showed no such symptoms.

Because these antibodies that cause pain were not found in patients' central nervous systems, the researchers suspect that fibromyalgia is a disease of the immune system, not a disease that originates in the pain pathways in the brain.

This idea is not entirely surprising - 80 percent of people with fibromyalgia are women, and women are much more affected by autoimmune diseases - but it is controversial, as brain imaging studies have left many scientists with the assessment that fibromyalgia is a neurological disease in origin.

In recent years, however, genetic studies have found evidence that fibromyalgia can be an autoimmune condition, at least in a subset of patients.
