They had been in the hot seat since the Academy of Medicine had recommended suspending their reimbursement.
PCR tests will no longer be reimbursed from "this autonomous", announced Monday evening in a televised address, Emmanuel Macron.
The goal is simple: “To encourage vaccination,” said Emmanuel Macron.
By forcing people to pay for tests to have the health pass or before going to see their relatives, the executive hopes to encourage people to be vaccinated ... without forcing them to do so.
The tests to be carried out on medical prescription would remain reimbursed by Social Security.
No information was given regarding reimbursement of antigenic tests.
Tests already paid for for foreigners
"Among the factors that can deter individuals from vaccination, we must question the repeated use of RT-PCR or antigenic tests which are offered free of charge on French soil unlike most European countries", wrote in a statement from the Academy of Medicine, released on June 23.
The health pass "encourages more and more people to use screening tests and repeat them at will, (...) especially those who do not wish to be vaccinated against Covid-19", she lamented.
The government had not rejected this idea, specifying everything that this could be the case "at the start of the school year".
Since July 7, PCR and antigen tests have been billed to foreign tourists visiting France, respectively 49 and 29 euros.
