(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 12 - The South African army today announced the deployment of its soldiers in two provinces, one of which hosts Johannesburg, to help the police counter the looting and fire attacks against economic activities. "The South African National Defense Force has begun pre-deployment processes in line with the request for assistance received ... to support the law enforcement agencies deployed respectively in the provinces of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal with the aim of quelling the riots that have gripped both provinces in the past few days, "the army said in a statement. Leviolences erupted from the arrest of former president JacobZuma, sentenced to 15 months in prison by the Constitutional Court for refusing to appear before the anti-corruption inquiry commission investigating alleged fraud under his presidential term. The 79-year-old remains popular, especially in his native KwaZulu-Natal province. AEshowe, a city close to Zuma's hometown of Nkandla, the police opened fire to disperse crowds after a supermarket was looted in the early hours of this morning. The police also reported that parts of Johannesburg's main streets have been closed due to protests, with dozens of cars set on fire in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal and dozens of arrests. The people involved were also affected by the restrictive measures imposed for the Covid epidemic.Today the Constitutional Court is examining the sentence of arrest of the former president to modify it or reconfirm it.
