(ANSA) - JOHANNESBURG, 12 JUL - The South African army today announced the deployment of its soldiers in two provinces, one of which hosts Johannesburg, to help the police counter looting and fire attacks against economic activities.
"The South African National Defense Force has begun pre-deployment processes in line with the request for assistance received ... to support the law enforcement agencies deployed respectively in the Gautenge KwaZulu-Natal provinces with the aim of quelling the unrest that has gripped both provinces in recent days, "the army said in a statement.
The violence erupted with the arrest of former president Jacob Zuma, sentenced to 15 months in prison by the Constitutional Court for refusing to appear before the anti-corruption inquiry commission that investigates alleged fraud under his presidential term. The 79-year-old remains popular, especially in his native province of KwaZulu-Natal. (HANDLE).
