Münster - In winter, the greenhouse offers shelter for many plants such as winter salads.

The little house is also worthwhile in summer, because the plants there are protected from wind, rain and hail.

But the vegetables do not always survive the summer in the greenhouse unscathed.

Because

pests

also feel at home in a warm, humid climate

.

However, many of them are easy to fight naturally.

Pests in the greenhouse: how to get rid of the animals

A greenhouse that is fully exposed to the sun

heats up a lot in summer

.

This is exactly the right thing for many plants in the greenhouse, for example melons or pineapples.

But the warm and humid climate in the greenhouse not only promotes plants, but also pests.

If you don't ventilate regularly in summer, you will find unwanted guests much faster at vegetables and other plants.

According to the NRW Chamber of Agriculture, the following pests are most common in greenhouses:

  • Aphids

  • Spider mites

  • Whitefly

  • Thrips

That is why it is important to regularly do control rounds through the greenhouse even in summer.

Garden fans can recognize an infestation very quickly and can help their plants at an early stage.

Pests in the greenhouse: how to recognize the individual pests

Almost every pest leaves its own damage pattern on the plants.

The above-mentioned, most common representatives in the greenhouse can be recognized by gardeners by the following characteristics:

  • Aphids

: When infected with aphids, the leaves curl and sometimes have yellow spots.

Since the aphids secrete so-called honeydew, they still attract sooty mildew.

    They also destroy the leaf.

Aphids usually sit in groups on the underside of the leaf and multiply quickly when exposed to heat and moisture.

  • Spider mites

: Spider mites are very small, so that instead of the animal itself, its damage can be seen.

Small webs form in the leaf axils and leaf margins.

In addition, small, white dots can be seen on the leaves.

In the final stage, the leaves curl up and fall off.

  • Whitefly

: At the beginning of an infestation of the whitefly, the leaves stick and after some time have dark spots.

As with the aphids, the reason for this is the honeydew expelled by the whitefly, which attracts sooty fungi.

If the infestation is severe, the plant will eventually stop growing.

  • Thrips

: The leaves are covered with yellow and silvery-gray speckles when they are infected with thrips.

Even flowers can be covered with these shapes.

Thrips can usually be recognized on the underside of the leaves, they have an elongated body.

Once gardeners have identified the right pest,

they can take targeted action against them in the next step

If there is already an infestation, the NRW Chamber of Agriculture recommends

taking

action

against the pests in the greenhouse with

beneficial

insects

.

The following beneficial insects keep the pests in check:

  • Aphids

: parasitic wasps (Aphidius species), lacewing larvae (Chrysoperla carnea) and the predatory gall mosquito (Aphidoletes aphidimyza).

The intense aroma of garlic also helps against aphids *.

  • Spider mites

: Predatory mites (Phytoseiulus persimilis) (Amblyseius californicus)

  • Whiteflies

    : parasitic wasp (Encarsia formosa)

  • Thrips

: predatory mite (Amblyseius cucumeris) or predatory bugs (Orius species)

The corresponding animals can usually be bought on the Internet or in specialist shops.

Garden fans should refrain from using chemicals, because they not only destroy pests, but also kill other animals.

It also helps to shade the greenhouse a little or to set it up in a place in the garden where larger trees provide shade.
