(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, JUL 14 - After the beautiful and hard-fought final of the 2020 European Football Championships in Wembley, Italy and England, together and in Brussels, they wanted to underline the historical bonds of friendship and respect that bind the two countries.
Today, in fact, the ambassador of Italy in Brussels, Francesco Genuardi, together with his British counterpart, Martin Shearman, went to the Heysel stadium, in the presence of the Brussels union, Philippe Close, for a moment of common recollection in memory of the 39 victims of 1985 Champions Cup final between Juventus and Liverpool.
The two ambassadors - a note reads - wanted to pay homage to the victims and to the city of Brussels that hosts the two diplomatic representations by placing a wreath of flowers, to strongly relaunch the signal of a long-lasting friendship that unites Italy and England, united by solidarity and the duty of memory towards the Heysel victims of the same passion for football and for sport.
This initiative had already been made known on social media on the eve of the final of the 2020 European Football Championships by the two ambassadors, who in a spirit of mutual respect and friendship - whatever the winner of the European competition - had agreed to pay, together with the mayor of Brussels, a tribute to the Heysel victims.
