Bread is inextricably linked with German cuisine.

Whether sourdough, yeast dough, wholemeal bread * or toast: Germans love their cultural asset, bread.

According to GfK, they bought 21 kilograms per capita in 2018.

Unfortunately, bread is also one of the foods that often ends up in the garbage * - because it quickly becomes stale or even moldy.

As the “Too good for the bin” initiative reports, around six million tons of food end up in the trash in private households every year.

Bread and baked goods come third after fruit, vegetables and prepared dishes.

Bread is moldy: Throwing it away helps

Once bread has gone moldy, even if it is only on a corner, the only thing that really helps is throwing it away, even if it is a shame.

Even if only a few places are visible to us, the mold can already have spread throughout the bread.

Don't let it get that far.

Here are our

tips against throwing away

:

  • Buy or bake only as much bread as you can use in your household within a few days.

  • If that doesn't work and you already know that you won't be able to finish the loaf: Freeze half or a few slices of bread, preferably when it is still fresh.

If necessary, you can thaw it again at room temperature or, if you have frozen individual slices, bake it in the toaster.

  • Store bread properly

    .

Storing bread properly: in the summer, in the refrigerator, as an exception

One reason why bread is thrown away so often is that it is stored incorrectly: it should be packed tightly, but not hermetically, airtight, as recommended by the consumer advice center. Bread likes

airy, dry storage

. Ceramic or stone pots and stainless steel boxes are well suited, as are bread boxes or the original bag from the baker. One place that is generally not recommended for storing bread: the refrigerator. But there is one exception. In summer, especially on

warm, humid days

, bread is particularly prone to mold. This climate promotes mold growth: if the environment is too humid and the air cannot circulate, water can accumulate and mold can develop.

The solution in this case: Store the bread in a cool place on hot days with high humidity.

Bread gets stale faster in the refrigerator, but at least it doesn't go moldy as quickly.

By the way: the more

rye and whole grain

a bread contains, the longer it can be kept!

Wheat products spoil faster.
