In recent years the phrase post-trauma has become more and more common in our lives, and we are exposed to more and more people who are in the social circle close to us and suffering from the phenomenon.

Post-trauma can occur as a result of a variety of serious life events: rape, car accidents, war, terrorist incidents, domestic violence, boycott, outdoor violence, earthquakes, tsunamis, corona and more.

Does anyone who has experienced such an event develop post-trauma?

Luckily for us, the answer is no.

Most people succeed in overcoming them through their natural resilience mechanisms.

At the same time, statistics show that 8-6 percent of the population develops post-traumatic symptoms.

The variety of difficult life events has been joined in recent years by the realization that even a life event that is considered one of the pinnacles of happiness, birth - can be a trigger for the development of post-trauma.

It turns out that the birth event, and especially if (but definitely not only) it is a complex and life-threatening birth, may develop post-traumatic symptoms in the mother.

Even if the mother has had a "normal" birth, she can still be left with trauma.

Post-trauma development may be related to objective factors and subjective factors: The objective factors are related to the type of birth: vaginal, instrumental (vacuum or forceps) or caesarean section (elective or emergency).

Subjective factors are related to the mother's feelings, such as loss of control, self-blame, impersonal attitude or negative attitudes expressed by the medical staff, unrecognized concerns, questions or requests, insufficient information, unsatisfactory privacy and respect, unsatisfactory care and treatment After birth and more.

What are the signs of postpartum trauma?

The woman may suffer from bursting images (flashbacks) from the birth event (appearance of the monitor, a picture from the memory of the medical staff, etc.) that invade her thoughts uncontrollably (this is an symptom of intrusion), be increased arousal (easily startled, jump to hear any baby sound and more), change the Her personal perception of herself and the world ("I am not worth it" or "I can not trust doctors"), to avoid vital and important activities (such as accessing routine criticism for herself and the newborn), and other expressions at different levels and levels of difficulty that hurt the woman herself, and may Damage the relationship with the baby, the spouse and of course in other circles of influence.

The link between post-trauma and postpartum depression

A common mistake is to think that this is the same problem, and many researchers find a lack of clarity regarding the diagnosis.

PTSD is classified as a trauma and stress-related disorder, and postpartum depression is classified as a mood disorder when during the familiar clinical course, depression appears frequently with PTSD.

Post-trauma victims are different from women who experience postpartum depression.

While postpartum depression is associated with injury or dysfunction and poor mood, postpartum post-trauma is associated with re-engaging in the birth itself and restoring a sense of lack of control and pain.

Postpartum post-trauma is manifested in the re-occupation of the birth itself.

Thousands of post-traumatic births each year

It turns out that the incidence of complete post-trauma following childbirth in the Western world ranges from 1 to 6 percent of all births.

The number of births in Israel in 2018 was 184,457, which means that each year the number of women at risk of developing full post-trauma ranges from 1,844 to 11,067.

The amazing statistic is that the risk of developing post-trauma, which includes some of the symptoms (and still causes great difficulty for the mother), ranges from 8.3 to 32 percent, which means that when translated to the population in Israel, the annual range is between 15,310 and 59,026.

How is post-traumatic stress disorder treated?

In the case of post-trauma it is of course important to consult a professional who will tailor the appropriate treatment. One of the proven therapies is the NLP intervention method that can be attributed to the cognitive-behavioral stream. The method includes cognitive and behavioral procedures that involve direct activity to change automatic responses (thoughts, feelings, and behavior).

A recent study examining NLP intervention aimed at helping women with postpartum diagnosis following childbirth was completed. The study presented impressive results in being able to help those women overcome the consequences of the birth event. The findings showed improvement in all the dimensions studied - the general level of post-trauma decreased and there was an improvement in all post-traumatic symptoms. NLP treatment also contributed to restoring a sense of control, as throughout the study stages patients were able to regain a sense of control over their relationship with the immediate environment, in terms of perceptions and beliefs about the self and the world, as well as restoring a sense of competence and self-esteem.

NLP therapy has succeeded in restoring patients' sense of control and ability.

The study means that NLP treatment can help postpartum patients after childbirth, and patients who come with post-trauma from other life events (under slight adjustments) - at a relatively low cost or investment, get the desired cure and gain the most optimal and positive experience after The birth process is complex anyway.
