(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 18 - Covid red alert in Indonesia, one of the countries most affected by the pandemic and one of the main clusters of the new resurgence of the virus in Asia and in the world.

According to the latest available data, the archipelago recorded 54 milannew infections and 1,205 deaths in 24 hours.

The international media report it.

The spike in infections, recorded since the beginning of June, is also putting a strain on the health system with an alarming lack of oxygen in the most affected areas, mainly in Java.

On July 3, travel restrictions began in the country and schools, parks, shopping centers and restaurants were closed.

Only 5.8% of the population (approximately 16 million people) have so far been fully vaccinated in the country.
