(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 18 - At least 23 people were killed on the outskirts of Mumbai after several houses were overwhelmed by a landslide caused by the monsoon beaches. Building collapses are common during India's monsoon season which runs from June to September. Mumbai, a metropolis with 20 million people, was hit by incessant rains throughout the weekend and, according to the national meteorological service, "moderate to heavy rains or thunderstorms are expected for the next two days". Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted his condolences and assured compensation for the families of the victims. Last month, 12 people were killed in the collapse of a building in a Mumbai slum. As of September, 39 people died in the collapse of a three-story apartment building in Bhiwandi, near the metropolis.(HANDLE).
