Vacation pay: Around half of Germans receive the special payment
The so-called 14th monthly salary or vacation bonus is usually paid in June or July and is intended to enable employees to go on vacation. In fact, however, only
46 percent of all employees in the private sector
, i.e. less than half,
receive
vacation pay. This was the result of a current online survey conducted by the Internet portal Lohnspiegel.de, which is supported by the Institute for Economic and Social Sciences (WSI) of the Hans Böckler Foundation. For the analysis, information from more than 57,000 employees in the period from the beginning of May 2020 to the end of April 2021 was evaluated.
Especially in the corona crisis, in which many are suffering from the financial losses of short-time work, vacation pay is more valuable than ever for many employees.
According
to the survey, employees in
private-sector
companies bound by collective bargaining agreements have the greatest chance of achieving this
.
Here a whopping 73 percent receive vacation pay, while only 35 percent of employees in companies without a collective agreement receive the bonus.

How much is the vacation pay?
Depending on the industry, the amount of vacation pay can be very different.
For example, employees in the middle pay group will receive collectively agreed vacation pay between
155 and 2,558 euros in
2021
, the Hand-Böckler-Foundation continues
(without taking allowances / supplements into account, based on the final stage of the vacation duration).
According to this, employees in agriculture and in the hotel and restaurant industry get the least holiday pay, while the
highest payments are
made in wood and plastics processing, the metal industry, in the motor vehicle trade, in the insurance industry and in retail.
