Cannes has barely lowered the curtain when Venice is already pointing the end of its lagoon.
Madres Paralelas
, a film by Pedro Almodovar starring Penélope Cruz, will open the 78th edition of the Mostra, which will take place from September 1 to 11, organizers announced on Monday.

The film, which also stars Milena Smit, Israel Elejalde, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Julieta Serrano and Rossy De Palma, will compete for the prestigious Golden Lion. Being part of a theme dear to the director, the film will have as heroines two mothers who gave birth on the same day.
“I'm talking about the importance of ancestors and descendants. The inevitable presence of memory. There are many mothers in my filmography, those who are part of this story are very different, ”
said Pedro Almodovar in a statement last June. No release date has yet been brought forward, but
Madres Paralelas is
expected to
hit
our screens in 2022.
“I was really born as a director in Venice in 1983 (...) in the Mezzogiorno Mezzanotte section. Thirty-eight years later, I am called to open the Mostra. I am really grateful to the festival for this honor and I hope to live up to it
”, reacted the Spanish director.

Pedro Almodovar, 71, received in 2019 a Golden Lion of Honor for his entire career.
