Today is the 29th anniversary of the Via D'Amelio massacre in which judge Paolo Borsellino and his escort agents Agostino Catalano, Emanuela Loi, Vincenzo Li Muli, Walter Eddie Cosina and Claudio Traina lost their lives.
"The attack in via D'Amelio, twenty-nine years ago, was conceived and carried out with brutal inhumanity. Paolo Borsellino paid with his life for his righteousness and consistency as a man of the institutions. With him the agents of the escort died, Emanuela Loi, Agostino Catalano, Vincenzo Li Muli, Walter Eddie Cosina, Claudio Traina. The memory of that massacre, which so deeply marked republican history, still arouses an unchanged emotion, and together it
renews the awareness of the need for a common commitment to eradicate the mafias
, to counter illegality, to break connivance and complicity that favor the criminal presence ". The President of the Republic,
Sergio Mattarella
, writes in a message
.
"Paolo Borsellino, and like him Giovanni Falcone - he continues -, knew well that the fight against the mafia requires a strong collaboration between institutions and society. For this they have spent themselves with all energy. As magistrates they have expressed very high professional qualities. They have embarked on new paths. , more effective, in investigations and trials. They have testified, by men of the state, how the mafias can be defeated, they have shown that their organization, their plans can be revealed and that their bosses and their hitmen can be insured justice. For this they were killed. They never resigned themselves and fought for the dignity of our civil life. They have always been and will always be - underlines the head of state - an example for citizens and young people. Many important results in the fight against the mafias have been obtained over the years thanks to the work of Borsellino and Falcone. The Republic is close to Borsellino's relatives and to the families of the servants of the State, whose life was cruelly broken to affect the freedoms of all. Honoring those sacrifices, promoting legality and civilization, is a moral duty that we feel in our consciences ".
"29 years after the Via D'Amelio massacre, Italy does not forget Judge Paolo Borsellino. The explosion that killed the magistrate and the escort agents on 19 July 1992 warns us that no compromise can be tolerated in the fight against the mafia . Almost 30 years later it is unacceptable that a real reconstruction of the facts has not been achieved. Only the full truth can allow justice to free Italy from this painful and unsustainable burden ". This was declared by the President of the Senate
Elisabetta Casellati
