(ANSA) - ROME, JUL 19 - The new documentary by Walter Veltroni is dedicated to Pio La Torre, regional secretary of the PCI in Sicily, killed by the mafia on April 30, 1982 in Palermo.

La Torre was killed when in Sicily the intertwining of the mafia, political terrorism and the deviated state manifested itself in the most cruel way. In three years, 40 years ago, together with members of the police forces, magistrates and professionals, BorisGiuliano, Cesare Terranova, Piersanti Mattarella, Gaetano Costa, Carlo Alberto dalla Chiesa were killed. The mafia, as it will return to do ten years later with the murders of Falcone and Borsellino (whose death anniversary is today in Via D'Amelio), is intertwined with politics and power, it becomes, from time to time, principal and perpetrator of assassinations and massacres. Pio la Torre and Rosario di Salvo, his driver and friend, are killed because the political leader of the Sicilian left has forcefully denounced the character of the mafia as a system,he prepared a law that introduced the crime of mafia association and the confiscation of assets and opposed the construction of an American base in Comiso which had aroused strong interest in criminal organizations.
Veltroni thus returns to recount our recent past through the portrait of an intense, shy, determined man, whom death dramatically made one of the many heroes that, unfortunately, the country needed: "I had known Pio I loved him for years. Taking care of his life and the murder of Rosario di Salvo is an honor and a great responsibility.
With the collaboration of his sons Franco and Filippo and his close friends and companions we will try to reconstruct the life of a left-wing executive, of a man who he never stopped fighting the mafia and the strong powers, which helped the country to understand and fight the mafia system ".
The life of Pio La Torre will emerge from interviews, recordings of trials, testimonies, archives of local Sicilian TVs, speeches at party congresses or in Parliament, from memories and unpublished images shared by the family. (HANDLE).
