A manufacturer from Bavaria is recalling a dietary supplement.

It is a misrepresentation of the recommended amount - with potentially serious consequences.

Kulmbach / Röttenbach - For the purpose of a healthier way of life, a large part of the population uses food supplements to enhance the diet with vitamins, minerals or other nutrients.

However, caution is advised: Not every preparation is suitable for every organism, and some of the product offers are said to be of insufficient use.

It is not for nothing that package inserts usually explain that taking dietary supplements cannot replace a healthy diet, but only "supplement" according to the name.

Recall of dietary supplements: Bavarian company affected

However, the recall of a manufacturer from Bavaria shows that it can lead to serious health consequences in the event of an overdose.

NaturaFit GmbH from Röttenbach in Middle Franconia has to stop sales of a dietary supplement.

The Bavarian Food Safety and Veterinary Control Authority (KBLV) ordered the recall.

In the case of a NaturaFit product, the recommended daily dose is therefore much too high, which can damage your health if you take the product.

This is the NaturaFit offer AlphaLipoic Acid 300 R (+), filled in 75 capsules and available in online shops and pharmacies throughout Germany.

What exactly is the food supplement complained about?

R-Alpha Lipoic Acid is a sulfur-containing fatty acid with antioxidant properties.

These are also taken through the "normal" food intake, antioxidants are certified to have a cell-protecting, disease-reducing effect.

Scientists disagree that this property also applies to industrially produced supplements, as indicated by the consumer advice center.

Overdosage of a food supplement: it is about alpha lipoic acid

What is undisputed, however, is that if consumers ingest such substances in large quantities, overdosing them does more harm than it does to health.

"The daily dose resulting from the consumption recommendations of the article exceeds the safe daily intake many times over," says the communication from the control authority from Kulmbach.

As is usual with recall cases, the defective product should either be exchanged or disposed of - but under no circumstances should it be used any longer!

With regard to the threatening consequences, the authorities let it be known: “With only a slightly higher daily dose, the occurrence of a number of adverse effects, including serious adverse effects such as the triggering of cardiac arrhythmias and myocardial disorders (angina pectoris and myocardial infarction), signs of liver damage and observed the occurrence of an insulin autoimmune syndrome. "

Another dietary supplement recently had to be recalled, which was advertised, among other things, on the TV shopping channel QVC.
