The corona vaccination is considered to be the best protection against severe disease.

But the flu vaccination also has a protective effect, as a new study shows.

The corona vaccination offers protection against severe Covid-19. But even those who avoid being overweight * and keep their immune system fit through a healthy diet and exercise prevent serious illnesses. Scientists have now found a new preventive factor:

the flu vaccination

. US researchers reported this at the "European Congress of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases", which took place online this year, as reported by the

Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation

.

For the study, researchers from the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami compared the electronic patient records of over 74,000 people from the USA, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Israel and Singapore. They divided the files into a test group and a control group.

All patients had Covid-19, but the first group was vaccinated against influenza 14 days to six months before infection.

The second group had not been vaccinated against the flu, according to the BR. In their study, the researchers compared how often there were 15 serious corona episodes in the groups. Including sepsis, stroke, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, kidney failure, heart attack, pneumonia and admission to the intensive care unit.

Stroke risk increased by 58 percent due to Corona

The analysis showed that those who had not received a flu shot were significantly more likely (up to 20 percent more likely) to be admitted to the intensive care unit, according to the specialist portal Eurekalert.

The group with no flu vaccination was also up to 58 percent more likely to visit the emergency room and 45 percent more likely to develop blood poisoning.

The likelihood of a stroke was increased by 58 percent and the risk of venous thrombosis by up to 40 percent.

How exactly the flu vaccine protects against Covid-19 is not yet clear, according to Eurekalert, but most theories assume that it strengthens the innate immune system. This is the body's own, innate and unspecific defense.

The study's authors say their results strongly suggest that the flu vaccine protects against several serious Covid outcomes

.

However, more research would have to follow to prove the relationship and better understand it.

"The influenza vaccination could even benefit people who are reluctant to get a Covid-19 vaccine because of the novelty of the technology," said Susan Taghioff of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine: "Even so, the influenza vaccine is not Replacement for the Covid-19 vaccine, and we advocate that everyone receives their Covid-19 vaccine if they can, "Eurekalert continues to quote Taghioff.
