Where else Grand Prix races take place, donations in kind are now piling up for the flood victims.

The legendary Nürburgring has opened its gates for helpers and donations - the halls have been busy for days.

Hundreds of bags of clothing, toiletries and toys are waiting to be forwarded.

For those responsible, it's not just a logistical challenge.

Alexander Gerhard, press spokesman for the Nürburgring

»This is a very difficult situation.

On the one hand you have the unbelievable willingness to help and on the other hand you have very limited capacities.

And to communicate this really sensitively, so that nobody feels offended who wants to help, that is a very, very difficult task.

And at the same time you are affected by what is happening in the region, but also touched by this willingness to help.

The water that is here, the clothing that is here, the toys that were brought, the food, all of this was brought by volunteers and sorted by volunteers.

This is an incredible situation. "

Many of the volunteers came spontaneously - and immediately brought everything they thought was necessary.

Anna Geisen, volunteer

»Well, I just live in Daun.

We are just less affected and wanted to help those who are more affected.

I came here for the first time today and saw straight away how many things were handed in.

Which is just really nice.

And there we are right now, packing things for the household, for people and doing our best - and we think it's really awesome.

So I arrived here too and was overwhelmed. "

The Nürburgring itself is in the Ahrweiler district, which is particularly hard hit by the flood disaster.

Helicopter photos taken by the Rhineland-Palatinate police show the extent of the devastation in the region - the infrastructure has in some cases still completely collapsed.

The whole Ahr valley is only partially passable.

At the Nürburgring there are now countless ambulances, fire engines and heavy equipment from the German armed forces and technical aid organizations in the paddock - a logistics hub will soon be created here.

For those affected, the warehouse next door is a first point of contact to get direct help.

Alexander Gerhard, press spokesman for the Nürburgring

»We have people who come by to pick something up.

Among other things, these include people who have stayed at the hotel right next to the racetrack for the time being.

And of course, in constant contact with the aid organizations, which then have to take care of the distribution, we try to bring these things to the region as well. "

The relief supplies are now being distributed from the Nürburgring collection point to the affected districts.
