Some weren't so lucky.
In another subway, twelve people were killed by the floods.
Above the ground it was no less dramatic in some places.
The authorities have declared the highest level of alert in Henan Province.
By Wednesday morning, nearly 200,000 residents in Zhengzhou had been brought to safety.
36,000 people were directly affected by the floods.
The heavy floods are the result of record rainfall. Within three days, as much rain fell over the city as usual in a whole year - on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Henan Province weather agency, it was 200 liters per square meter within an hour. In China there are floods every year. According to experts, climate change leads to such extreme storms more often.
