(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, JUL 21 - The doors of the Royal Square Theater in Amsterdam opened a little earlier than expected this morning to welcome the crowd - hundreds of people - who came to pay a final tribute to the famous investigative reporter Peter R. de Vries, died on July 15 at 64 from injuries sustained in the ambush that took place last July 6 in Amsterdam.

The city authorities reminded on Twitter the importance of respecting the distancing to avoid the spread of the coronavirus.

The online condolence log dedicated to Peter R. deVries collected around 32,000 signatures yesterday at noon. The reporter and TV host had just left a TV studio in central Amsterdam after a talk show, in which he had intervened as a guest, when he was shot by several gunshots, five according to witnesses.

Since last year Peter de Vries has been adviser and confidant to the main prosecution witness in the trial against Ridouan Taghi, qualified before his arrest, in 2019 in Dubai, as the most wanted criminal in the Netherlands, in particular for a major drug case.

In 2019, the reporter announced that, according to police information, he was on Ridouan Taghi's list of people threatened with death. The press agencies Anp and Belga specify this.

Two men were arrested shortly after the shooting and remain in custody while police investigations continue. (HANDLE).
