The director and this year's Oscar winner Chloé Zhao (»Nomadland«) will be a member of the international jury of the 78th Venice Film Festival.
The organizers announced this.
The native Chinese will decide on the prizes on the committee, including the Golden Lion for the best film.
Last year, Zhao herself won the main prize in Venice with her semi-documentary work.
The cinema biennale is scheduled to run from September 1st to 11th. Along with Cannes and Berlin, the festival is one of the most important in the world. The jury is headed by the South Korean director Bong Joon-ho ("Parasite"). This was known since the beginning of the year, now the festival organizers have announced the full line-up.
In addition to Zhao, the Romanian director Alexander Nanau, who presented his later Oscar-nominated documentary "Collective" in Venice in 2019, and the Italian screenwriter and director Saverio Costanzo ("The loneliness of prime numbers", "My brilliant friend") were appointed. The jury was rounded off by three actresses: the Belgian Virginie Efira (recently seen in Cannes in Paul Verhoeven's “Benetta”), the US American Cynthia Erivo (“Harriet”, “The Outsider”) and the Canadian Sarah Gadon (“Alias Grace «).
In addition to the Golden Lion in Venice, Zhao's “Nomadland” also received three Oscars - and Zhao was only the second woman to be honored for best director.
The previous year, the chairman of the jury, Bong, made history when his film "Parasite" won the Oscar for best film as the second non-English language film ever.
