Ten years after Amy Winehouse's death, her family struggles to correct the singer's drug-related image.
"You think you know my daughter - the drugs, the addiction, the destructive relationships - but there was so much more," says her mother Janis in a new BBC documentary on the tenth anniversary of the singer's death, who died at the age of 27.
The new documentary also counters allegations that her family enjoyed their success and at the same time did not do enough to help the singer overcome addiction.
Winehouse's friend Catriona Gourley is particularly protective of the singer's parents.
“Janis and Mitch were there the whole time.
The countless times she's been taken to rehab, ”said Gourley, who says she was romantically involved with Winehouse herself.
Instead, Gourley suspects that one problem at the time was the tabloids' mockery of Winehouse's problems.
With today's greater awareness of mental health issues, her friend would have been treated differently, she told the BBC.
Winehouse was considered an exceptional artist who dealt with her personal problems in songs like "Back to black" and "Rehab".
Her voice and her musical style between pop, jazz and soul were as unmistakable as her external appearance, with numerous tattoos and pinned up beehive hairstyle.
However, over time, their performances also suffered from their excessive drug and alcohol consumption.
She died on July 23, 2011 of complications from alcohol poisoning.
Amy Winehouse's former godchild, singer Dionne Bromfield, has also made a documentary about her role model, which will be shown next week on MTV in Great Britain.
