One of the scientists on the Sage committee, the pool of experts advising the British government on handling the Covid pandemic, accused Downing Street of wanting to encourage an increase in cases so as to achieve herd immunity as soon as possible.

The Guardian reports it.

"What we are seeing is a government decision to infect as many people as possible, as quickly as possible, but using the rhetoric of caution so as to place the blame on the population," accused Professor Robert West, a health psychologist at the 'University College London and member of the Sage on the end of all anti-coronavirus restrictions decided by Boris Johnson starting last Monday despite the cases continue to increase. "It seems to the government that the political capital it will gain from such an approach is worth the damage to health and health services it will cause," West insisted.
