A Berlin-based food company has launched a recall for three products that can cause health damage due to excessive amounts of iodine.

Berlin - The superfood start-up Alvego (Algae, Vegan, to Go) from Berlin started a recall on Monday for certain batches and types of the algae salad they sell.

The company stated that the reason for the recall was that a “significantly too high amount of iodine per glass in a batch” had been found.

Recall: Alvego recalls seaweed salad that has been sold throughout Germany

Affected by the recall are the 190 gram jars of the organic algae salads "Red Algae Salad - Nordic Style" (batch: M1113), "Yellow Algae Salad - Oriental Style" (batch: M1506) and "Purple Algae Salad - Mediterranean Style" (batch : M1325) with the minimum best before date 01/28/2022 or 01/29/2022.

The company does not specify in which shops and branches Alvego sold the products that are now being recalled.

However, since the products are also sold online, it can be assumed that the recall affects the whole of Germany.

Recall: Danger especially for old people - "life-threatening metabolic derailment"

You should refrain from consuming the corresponding products, as the significantly increased amount of iodine can trigger significant health effects.

In its recall, the company writes: "Especially in older people with functional autonomy of the thyroid gland, even a single consumption of this iodine-rich algae can lead to jond-induced hyperthyroidism and, under certain circumstances, a life-threatening derailment of the metabolism." Children and adults too could suffer long-term health damage.

Customers who have purchased a corresponding product are requested to return it to the respective point of sale.

Also on Monday, a recall was started for ground beef that was sold in branches of Aldi and Lidl across Germany.
