Bruck an der Leitha - The Austrian subsidiary of the Mars food company has launched a recall for several ice cream bars.

Higher levels of a chemical than allowed have been found in the products of an ingredient.

Recall: Mars Austria recalls Snickers and Bounty Ice Cream

Mars Austria is recalling its ice cream snacks Snickers Ice Cream, Bounty Ice Cream and Snickers Crisp Ice Cream - each available in a 6-pack.

The products were sold in Austria, but the recall also affects German consumers who live near the border and shop there, as well as tourists.

As the company writes in a press release, according to the supplier, one ingredient contains ethylene oxide (ETO) in an amount “that is higher than what is permitted under EU law”.

The ingredient is usually used in small amounts in ice cream products.

Bar Recall: Toxic Chemical Found in Ice Cream Product - Not Hazardous if Eat, however

Ethylene oxide is mutagenic and carcinogenic. Short-term symptoms in humans include headache, dizziness, and nausea. In worse cases, the active ingredient can cause twitching and cramps up to a comatose state. The chemical is subject to strict EU guidelines. In the past, there have been repeated recalls of products such as muesli or spices because the permitted quantity was exceeded.

According to the manufacturer, consuming the recalled ice cream products is not harmful. Mars ice cream snacks contain only a small amount of this ingredient. Therefore, the ETO content in the ice cream product is only minimal and is "far below the legal limit values for Europe." Nevertheless, Mars Austria is carrying out a recall of the affected products in cooperation with the food safety authorities in Austria. This situation affects both Mars and other manufacturers, according to the press release. The affected products have now been withdrawn from sale.

Anyone in possession of the affected ice cream bars should not return them to retailers or send them back to Mars.

Please contact customer service at MarsQuality.at@effem.com or on +43 2162 601 4824 (Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.).

Please also send the company photos of the front of the packaging with the best-before date and provide their contact details.

The purchase price will be refunded.
