Five things you may not have known about the brain ("not to be missed" system)

Many of us enjoy a cup or two of coffee throughout the day, but new research suggests that those who drink much more than that may cause a contraction in brain volume and increase their risk of dementia over time.

A new study found that people who drank six or more glasses a day were 53 percent more likely to develop dementia compared to those who drank one or two glasses or less.

The study, which involved 17,702 participants aged 37 to 73, whose data was taken from the British Biobank Project, was a long-standing project that gathered information on a range of health and lifestyle metrics, including coffee consumption, brain volume and disease - as well as additional data such as socioeconomic status.

His findings were published in Nutritional Neuroscience.

"Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world," says epidemiologist Kitty Pam of the University of South Australia.

She says this is the most extensive research on the relationship between coffee, brain volume measurements, the risks of dementia and the risks of stroke.

Affects brain volume.

Although we know that coffee affects the brain in a variety of ways - including maintaining alertness - previous studies have not been unequivocal, and in some cases have been contradictory when it comes to the relationship between brain volume and dementia.

After introducing variables such as sex, age, BMI, and long-term illness, the researchers found an association between drinking more coffee and smaller brain volumes among participants, as well as an increased risk of dementia.

This study did not examine what brain shrinkage the brain can reach.

While both gray matter and white matter help to control motor and sensory function, it is difficult to link these substances to specific outcomes in behavior or brain activity.

Cerebral shrinkage is also something that tends to happen naturally as we get older, and some studies suggest that there is a link between volume and dementia.

"Given all the possible changes, we have consistently found that higher coffee consumption is significantly associated with reduced brain volume - in fact, drinking more than six cups of coffee a day may increase the risk of developing brain diseases such as dementia and stroke," says Pam.

What is not clear is why this happens and it still remains to be seen how caffeine and coffee interact with brain cells and whether these interactions are ultimately positive or negative. The way caffeine binds to adenosine receptors in the brain may be one of the ways these changes occur, although they may be caused less directly just because of the effect of coffee on other parts of the body (such as the cardiovascular system). What we can say from this study is that it appears that multiple coffee consumption is associated with a much higher risk of dementia in a large sample group.

By the way, a few years ago a large study was conducted that included 200,000 subjects and was conducted by Harvard University.

The study found that consuming between 3 and 5 cups of coffee a day can actually prolong life.

In short - everything in moderation.
