On Sunday afternoon, the train crew on a regional train between Stralsund and Rostock discovered a cardboard box with holes in it.
Since it was unclear what was in the box and whether the contents posed a danger to travelers, they alerted the federal police.
The next platform was cleared as a precaution.
At temperatures around 30 degrees, the officers came and examined the find with a flashlight, among other things.
It quickly became clear: the content was not dangerous, but lively.
In the container, which was wrapped in black tape, sat a guinea pig that had probably been forgotten by its owner.
The rescuers reported that the animal was in a "reasonable condition," also because of the cooled air in the wagon.
It had been taken to a veterinary clinic.
They have never had such a case, said the spokesman.
“There was no endangerment,” it concluded.
Now the search is on for the owner of the animal.
