The first images of
Parallel Mothers,
the new film by Pedro Almodóvar, show the story of several women with which the filmmaker returns to the themes of motherhood and family. The film will open the Venice Film Festival on September 1 and will compete in the official section of the 78th edition of the Mostra, which will run until September 11. Just one day before, the feature film will hit Spanish theaters.
Parallel Mothers
will also become the fastest post-production of the last decades of Pedro Almodóvar's career, since filming ended, after 10 weeks of work, in the last days of May.
The cast of
Parallel Mothers
is made up of Penelope Cruz, the young Milena Smit, Israel Elejalde and Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, along with two classic faces in Almodóvar's filmography: Julieta Serrano and Rossy de Palma. “Two women share the hospital room where they are about to give birth. They are two single women, both with an unplanned pregnancy ”, reads the beginning of the film's synopsis. In June Almodóvar announced that he was speeding up the post-production of his latest film to release it in theaters in Spain in September. With that decision, he said, he hoped to encourage the return of the public to theaters after the summer, and after a catastrophic year for the exhibition guild due to the pandemic.
