The German Weather Service (DWD) warned of locally extreme heavy rain in north and north-east Germany this Monday.

In the course of strong thunderstorms, there is »severe weather potential«, the DWD announced on Twitter on Monday.

Local rainfall of 25 to 40 liters per square meter is possible, in some cases even more extreme amounts of precipitation of up to 60 liters.

According to the weather service, Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Hamburg, northern Brandenburg and a narrow strip in northeastern Lower Saxony are affected.

At the same time, the meteorologists expected severe thunderstorms with rain amounts of up to 40 liters per square meter as well as storms and hail in parts of southern Germany.

This was especially true for southern Bavaria and eastern parts of the neighboring state of Baden-Württemberg.

Large hail and squalls are also possible near the Alps.

In Berlin, Saxony, Brandenburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Upper Bavaria, numerous cellars and streets were flooded from Sunday evening in heavy rain.

At least two people were killed.

The Ahr valley in Rhineland-Palatinate, devastated by the storm, was spared new heavy rains during the night.

"The night was quiet," said a spokeswoman for the police in Koblenz.

There were no problems from further storms.

The clean-up continued on Monday.

"We are still working with strong forces," said the spokeswoman.

Therefore, the area in the Ahrweiler district should again remain closed to private traffic.

This means: Volunteers with a car have no access, according to the supervisory and service directorate responsible for the mission (ADD) they should take shuttle buses to arrive.

According to the State Statistical Office, more than 3,000 households in the disaster area in Rhineland-Palatinate have applied for immediate aid from the state so far.

About one and a half weeks after the devastating flood disaster with at least 179 deaths in western Germany, the people in the regions in Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia were able to breathe a sigh of relief over the weekend.

New storms and floods that had been feared did not materialize.

Special meeting of the Interior Committee

The Chamber of Agriculture in North Rhine-Westphalia has meanwhile identified numerous farms that were completely under water with their fields during the flood.

After an initial evaluation of satellite images, around 75 to 100 farms were seriously affected, reported the North Rhine-Westphalia Chamber of Agriculture.

The evaluation has not yet been completed.

The Interior Committee will hold a special session in the Bundestag on Monday.

In addition to possible omissions by the authorities, the MPs want to talk about whether the federal government should do more for disaster protection in the future.

Information is provided by the members of the Committee of Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) and the President of the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Aid (BBK), Armin Schuster.
