Actually, Johannes Martin Kränzle should have been singing on the stage in Bayreuth, but his voice didn't join in. Help finally came from the edge of the stage in the form of his colleague Bo Skovhus - but it was scarce.

Literally at the last minute, the Danish opera singer Bo Skovhus saved the "Meistersinger" performance at the Bayreuth Festival.

Because Beckmesser actor Johannes Martin Kränzle could not sing in poor health, Skovhus helped out at short notice on Monday evening.

He sang from the edge of the stage while Kränzle played in silence.

Skovhus had only arrived immediately before his performance, the festival had worried whether he would make it in time.

There was also grateful applause for him - not only from the audience, but from the whole team around director Barrie Kosky.

The successful and critically acclaimed production of the Wagner opera "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg" goes into its final year on the Green Hill.

The festival continues on Tuesday afternoon with the »Tannhauser«.

The Richard Wagner opera is shown in a production by director Tobias Kratzer, which was voted performance of the year in 2020 by the critics of the magazine “Opernwelt”.
