Faced with the rapid spread of the Delta variant in the territory, the United States decided to maintain its restrictions on travel i

This is bad news for travelers.

It does not matter whether they are tested or vaccinated: the United States maintains restrictions for international travelers until further notice, the White House announced on Monday.

"We are maintaining the existing travel restrictions at this stage," said the White House spokeswoman.

Jen Psaki.

She justifies this decision in particular by the rapid spread of the Delta variant "here and abroad".

Despite requests for reciprocity from the European Union in particular, American borders remain closed for French travelers for the time being.

A border closure criticized

While the countries of the European Union have decided to reopen their own borders to Americans, provided they are vaccinated against Covid-19 or present a negative test, travelers from the Schengen area, from the United Kingdom Uni and Ireland have not been able to enter the United States since March 2020.

This border closure is strongly criticized by tourism professionals in Europe, but also by American employers.

Canada has also decided to reopen its border from August 9 for US citizens and permanent residents living in the United States fully vaccinated, again without reciprocity.

Washington announced in early June the establishment of working groups with Canada, Mexico, the European Union and the United Kingdom to look into the issue of international travel, giving hope for a relaxation of restrictions.

Not only will this not happen, but the United States is also increasing the warnings to its nationals tempted to travel abroad.

In the United States, the daily average of new cases is the highest in the world

With nearly 52,486 new cases per day, the United States is facing a sharp rise in Covid-19 contamination.

According to Reuters: "The country has the highest daily average of new cases in the world, representing one in 10 cases recorded every day in the world".

At issue: the Delta variant, the most contagious since the outbreak of the Covid 19 pandemic, which is spreading at high speed throughout the world.

To curb its spread, the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC), America's leading federal public health agency, has added several countries to the list of destinations to sink for Americans. After the United Kingdom a week ago, Portugal and Spain join the countries advised against by the agency. For these Level 4 countries, the highest level of health alert, the United States recommends that travelers be fully immunized before departure and warns that even then they are at “risk”.

Vaccination is also a key to stopping the spread of the virus.

President Joe Biden and his administration, but also now a growing number of opposition politicians, are increasing calls to relaunch a vaccination process that slowed down during the summer.

These calls are motivated by a health and human challenge in the United States: the country is at this stage the most bruised in the world with more than 610,947 deaths recorded according to official data.
