An explosion with a previously unknown cause occurred on the premises of the Leverkusen Chempark.
The Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance classified the event in the "Extreme Danger" warning level.
The operating company Currenta asked residents to go to closed rooms and to close windows and doors.
Plant fire brigade and air test vehicles are in use.
Videos showed huge clouds of smoke rising over the buildings.
Several »chemical-related companies« are located on the Chempark site, as stated on the Chempark website.
