A hazardous waste incineration plant in the Buerrig neighborhood would be affected, reports broadcaster RTL. The causes are unknown for the moment but the inhabitants have been asked to keep doors and windows closed. Civil protection classified the event as "highly dangerous". There are several injured, the Cologne police wrote in a message on Twitter, inviting them to leave the access roads to the plant free. Part of the A1 motorway has also been closed to traffic. The explosion occurred just before 10 am this morning, the company responsible for the site, Currenta, said.
