He walks through the parish garden and whispers looking at the plants.

Apologize for not doing a little more.

A little more?

"I blame myself for not having shouted for the whole hospital to hear me, or for having knocked on the guard door until they treated me or for having gone directly to the hospital's address. And I didn't, I

preferred to be with my daughter, who knows? writhing in pain, hug her and go somewhere else

. "

Norma Fernández has just left the garden of the Loreto parish, in Sarandí, where the cinerary with the ashes of her daughter Gabriela Cano, who died on July 27, 2020, at the age of 31, is a victim of

cancer of the head of the uterus. .

But also the coronavirus, even though he did not contract it.

Three times a week Norma (60) repeats the routine with stoicism, willpower and a mixture of endless pain and anger.

He remarks that he

does not enter the parish,

that he goes directly to the garden because he does not want to have anything to do with God.

"That's it, enough, too much punishment ...

My four children underwent surgery

... Gaby, who had to undergo dialysis due to kidney problems, then the transplant came and when her life seemed resolved ... the damn cancer", bill.

"She fought like a warrior, she won but reappeared and there she ran into the laziness of those who

did not know how to fulfill her Hippocratic oath

and led her to end her life. What else will God have in store for me?" Asks her mother.

Back home, in Quilmes, Norma, a municipal employee in Avellaneda, talks with

Clarín

days after the first anniversary of her daughter's death.

"They tell me that time eases the pain, but

months go by and I don't find peace.

I'm angry with myself and with the doctors at the Hospital de Clínicas, where my daughter was treating cancer, but they turned their backs on her, Gaby was abandoned, they did not attend her because

the doctors said that the hospital was

was in a

national emergency due to the pandemic

. "

"We were very close friends, united, talkative and argued about everything," remembers Norma, here with her daughter Gaby.

Fernández made a complaint for

"abandonment of person, breach of duties of public officials"

that is processed in the National Criminal Prosecutor's Office No. 13 of the Federal Capital.

In parallel "there is an investigation for

malpractice

, since a non-praxis could be understood like this", explains Verónica Ottaviano, his civil lawyer;

There is another complaint, the criminal one, which is in the hands of Dr. Santiago Ruiz Rocha.

"We had several hearings at the Clinics with the doctors and they informed us that

one of the people responsible for treating Gaby was sanctioned.

I don't care about that, they want to detach themselves and throw the bundle at them ...", says the mother .

Norma, Gabriela's mother, filed a criminal complaint for the death of her daughter.

Without hesitation, Norma says that for a year she has repeated over and over again what she suffered.

"Both the mistreatment, the way in which Dr. SA fired us from the hospital,

denying the care of who was a patient of the team of which he is part

and not taking into account the urgency of his condition, as well as the denial of the care of Dr. AB The same day".

The version of the Hospital de Clínicas

Clarín

contacted the Hospital de Clínicas, which from its Communication Department replied:

"In relation to the patient Gabriela Cano, this institution accompanies the family in the pain caused by a loss of these characteristics from the first moment as the only premise. On the other hand, it is imperative to make known that the institution carried out an internal investigation to ensure the steps taken by the treating service, in this sense it was established that

there was no negligence

.

On the contrary, the professionals

communicated with the patient repeatedly,

receiving a negative response ".

And they added:

"It is also important to clarify that the only official communication channels of the Hospital de Clínicas with its patients are its website and those established during the pandemic and in no way is social networks included among these (this in reference to contact that Fernández had with a doctor via Facebook) Finally, it is public knowledge that

the pandemic, and consequently the isolation during 2020, modified the protocols, accesses and resources

of all health institutions. "

Three months without care

Gabriela was admitted on July 8, 2020 at the Rossi Hospital in La Plata,

after being adrift for almost three months, without care or available bed

.

Her condition had worsened substantially "and since April, when she was rejected from the Clinics, until her death my daughter suffered what no one else ... There is no right to die like this," Norma is bankrupt.

The poster that calls for a march on Tuesday, July 27, at 4:00 p.m., in Plaza Congreso, to commemorate the year of the death of Gabriela Cano.

"I promised Gaby in her last days to ask for justice for her abandonment and

I will do it even if it takes my own life

. As Pablo Musse tells me, Solange's father (who died in Córdoba due to cancer and the father was not allowed to enter the province to say goodbye), every time I talk to him:

until the last breath I have my rights

".

This Tuesday at 4:00 p.m., in Congress, Norma organized a march to ask not to forget her daughter.

"Her doctors left her shielded in the pandemic,"

reads the poster she calls.

"I have faith that people will accompany us, such as the Family and Victims of Malpractice Group, which is a support for me, because I could not alone. It is very hard to organize this type of movement for a dead daughter, there is no body that can endure and in the last weeks I had to ask for help

to the psychologist because I wake up in anguish, crying, I find it difficult to breathe, an ugly restlessness ".

Together with his always united brothers.

Here with Milagros (first on the left), Bárbara and Diego.

In her privacy, Norma wonders if it is worth such an effort, raffling both the fragile skeleton.

"Sometimes I doubt, but I shake myself and I do it convinced, above all for one reason: I cannot bear that any person

continues his life without any consequence in the

face of such abandonment and negligence.

I will never forget that April 21, in the Gynecological Oncology area on the fifth floor, pleading for my daughter to be assisted.

It was the place where he had been attending, fulfilling every indication to the letter, where

just a month ago they told him that everything was fine

. "

He emphasizes that it is not "revenge or tit for tat, but it is an imperative need for

everyone knows who these people are, what they did, what they caused with their actions.

They caused the death of a 31-year-old girl full of dreams and the destruction of an entire family.

They must pay with all of the law what they did. "Norma took the trouble to search the internet for the name of one of the indicated doctors and"

the comments of the people, highlighting the mistreatment of the professional

(this chronicler looked for them and found dozens)

leave much to be desired

and draws even more attention for a place of the prestige of the Clinicas ".

Gabriela with her father Jorge Cano.

Strong, tenacious, also stubborn, Norma has the unconditional support of her children, although they still somatize the irretrievable absence. "

Milagros (15) suffers from panic attacks and is in full psychiatric treatment

. Diego (27) is the one who reminds me of Gaby's most beautiful anecdotes, he tries to remember her like that, smiling, but I know he suffers because he is the one who was with her in the moment she fell into disrepair in the room. And Barbara (35) was the closest buddy but she's sunk, she doesn't come up. Jorge, the father, who cries for her alone, but is at the foot of the canyon in every step I decide give. And Susana, my friend and with whom I have lived for a decade, who is unconditional and was in each of the nights of suffering ".

There were many evenings of suffering, both at home and in recent weeks at the Rossi Hospital.

"I remember that Gaby thought she was going to recover and that she was so angry with the Clinicas doctors that during her hospitalization she made me promise her that when she got out of that state I would accompany her to see them at their office 'and they will listen to me and they will to know who I am ', she said angrily.

Norma held her daughter Gaby's hands until almost the end "so that she wouldn't go away."

But Norma prefers and needs to remember that friendly, affectionate daughter, always attentive to her mother and arguing about everything ... She was tremendous, she didn't want to lose one - she remembers nostalgically -.

A girl who searched the other a lot, watching out for her nephews, really the best friend of her friends

Piki, Noelia, Paula, Vanina and El Pez.

She worked as a secretary for a councilor and was looking for an apartment to live alone.

Any hobby?

Oh, her hair and nails were always impeccable.

Super careful with that. "

Norma recalls that "

that Monday, July 27, she was on oxygen, lucid but exhausted from not sleeping for days ...

She was afraid of falling asleep because she dreamed all black and she did not want to die."

Around eight o'clock at night, the woman left the room for a few minutes to buy some food and on her return she could no longer enter, the doctors would not allow it: Gaby had had seizures.

"A lioness fought to the end, but the paradox is that

she fought with claw to the cancer she had but was also a victim of the coronavirus that she did not have," he

curses with resignation and stoicism.
